Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most
accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.
~Charles W. Eliot
Both the farmer and I were the lucky recipients of books this Christmas. My mother has been a voracious reader all her life, and she passed the love of books on to me. My son, daughter and daughter-
in-law are also fond of books. There were books in just about everyone's stack of gifts this year. The farmer has been perusing his heavy volume Journeys of a Lifetime, a beautiful book describing in pictures and text five hundred of the world's greatest trips. He's busy turning pages, trying to decide where we'll take our vacation in 2010. He also received copies of In Defense of Food by Micahel Pollan and How Your House Works by Charlie Wing.
I received six books: Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet, and A Thousand Days in Venice by Marlena de Blasi. This collection will likely last me several months unless I carve out more hours to curl up on the sofa and read. Not a bad idea.
I read Eat, Pray, Love at a very difficult time in my life and could relate to a great deal of what she had to say. You'll have to tell me how you like it. I liked the first two-thirds- the last third probably was the weakest part. Also let me know how you like Love Medicine. That's such a great book with great characters!
